Colorado High School Students
Win Communications Awards in 2009

Twenty-five student from three Colorado high schools submitted 50 entries in the 2009 communications contest. Thirty-five awards, ranging from first place to honorable mention, were handed out. A full list of award winners will be posted soon.

Summary

Kent Denver School, Sun Devils' Advocate, 21 awards (five firsts, six seconds, seven thirds, three honorable mentions)— sweepstakes winner

Mountain Vista High School, Highlands Ranch, Eagle Eye, four awards (four firsts)

Rock Canyon High School, Highlands Ranch, The Rock, eight awards (five firsts, three seconds)

The 14 first-place entries were sent to the national contest. Award winners at this level are:

• William Miller, first place, Kent Denver School, Editorial, "Help wanted: Newspapers"

• Kate Jones, first place, Rock Canyon High School in Highlands Ranch, Columns, "America is losing its innocence," "The wrong kind of change," "Jay-walking through life"

• Mattie Nobles, second place, Rock Canyon High School, Graphics, "Your hand in history"

• Cody Autterson, third place, Kent Denver School, Cartooning, "Global hunger"

• Trevor David, honorable mention, Mountain Vista High School in Highlands Ranch, Sports Story, "Few fans see minor sports"

• Kyle McDaniel, honorable mention, Rock Canyon High School, "Compassion at home"

• Kate Jones, honorable mention, Rock Canyon High School, Feature Photo, "DNC-All eyes were on Denver"

The Colorado High School Communications Contest wasn't held in 2008.

2007 High School Communications Awards

Nearly 60 Colorado high school journalists have been recognized by Colorado Press Women for their writing and graphic design skills. The students are learning journalism skills by participating in the creation and production of their school newspapers.

The contest categories include Editorial, Opinion, News, Feature, Sports, Columns, Feature Photo, Sports Photo, Cartooning, Reviews, Graphics and Page Layout. The first-place winner in each category goes on to compete in the National Federation of Press Women High School Communications Contest. National winners will be announced in September at the national conference in Richmond, Va.
